PilotEdit Lite is great for editing large text files, but it’s also a decent enough software for editing programming files such as C, C++, XML, SQL, Java, JavaScript, PHP, ASP, Assembly, ASP.NET, CSS, Visual Basic, Perl, Python, Ruby, and more. Now, the size of the software is just over 10MB, and installing was a breeze. Once it’s up and running, it’s time to dig in to see what it brings to the table. The first thing you’ll see is the language selection screen, then another for choosing your favorite font, font style, and size. After going through those steps, you’ll see the software in all its glory. The user interface is not the best looking, but it works regardless.
Edit large files with PilotEdit
After making it to the primary user interface, you’ll see several options at the top. The first is File, and that’s where you need to go if you want to open a document, or you can click one of the highlighted folders to do so. Just search for the document you want, then open it and from there you’ll be able to make edits. Users can use this tool to open multiple documents at the same time, and they can be available via the file tree or in tabs. There’s also a String window that is found at the bottom of the File Tree window. Additionally, that is where you’ll find the Bookmark window, a place where all your favorite documents are stored. We should point out that the String window is all about providing quick access to various code presets As for editing, it’s quite simple. Simply choose which line you’ll like to make changes to, edit it, then click on File > Save, or click on the Save button for faster operation.
FTP support Interestingly enough, PilotEdit comes with a basic FTP client. Click on Configure at the top, the choose FTP Account. A new window will pop-up, and this is where you’ll need to know the username and password to your remote FTP account. The FTP client is important here because it helps for handling large files. You see, the software can tackle items larger than 10GB, while the FTP option support downloading files up to 4GB in size.
The Options area To make certain changes to the software, you are required to enter the Settings area. Travel to Configure > Options and have a look at the eight tabs available. We like the fact that users can create backup files and make changes to how the HEX Mode works. Overall, PilotEdit Lite is quite powerful, and there are things we haven’t talked about because there’s so much to do. Clearly, this program is designed for developers rather than regular computer users, so if you’re not playing around with programming files, then this is not for you.
